Policy and influencing

We use evidence about the barriers faced by people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus to propose changes across society. We work with decision makers to encourage them to implement our ideas.

RNID influences decision makers, employers and service providers to make sure that society is as inclusive as possible for people who are deaf, have hearing loss and tinnitus.

To do this we turn our data and evidence into policy positions. We promote these to politicians, organisations, service providers or anyone else with the power to shape society.

Our current priorities

  • We work with government and NHS bodies to ensure NHS audiology services are based on the needs of people with hearing loss.
  • We campaign to ensure that all NHS services are accessible for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
  • We lobby the Government to ensure deaf people are supported to enter, remain and thrive in the workplace.

Our latest activity

Live campaigns

  • Access to Work: We’re calling on the Government to make sure Access to Work, designed to pay for adjustments to help disabled people get into or stay in work, is accessible to everyone.
  • Fight for accessible healthcare: We’re calling on governments, NHS organisations, GPs and other NHS services to take action to meet the requirements of equality legislation and standards for accessible information and communication.
  • ‘It Does Matter’: We’re aiming to change public attitudes towards people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
  • Ear wax removal: We’re demanding better, free access to ear wax removal services on the NHS for those who have a medical need.
