Professor Manohar Bance is a Cambridge ear surgeon and clinician-scientist advancing next-generation diagnostics and treatments for hearing and balance disorders.

As Professor of Otology at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, he leads the SENSE Lab, where clinicians, scientists, and engineers co-design solutions for new therapies to regenerate hearing.

His interests include genetic hearing loss, wearable technologies, middle ear myoclonus, and hearing implants.

Professor Bance is the UK Chief Investigator for the first-in-human gene therapy trial for genetic hearing loss, aiming to restore hearing for children born without it, and he collaborates with companies developing regenerative treatments.

What do you hope your research will achieve? 

To improve quality of life for the millions of people with hearing and balance disorders, relieve suffering for those affected by tinnitus, and to give people with hearing loss the same opportunities that hearing people have.

What does RNID funding mean to you?

The Innovation Seed Fund will allow us to start a proof of concept for innovative solutions.
