Getting used to hearing aids

Overview

Modern hearing aids are digital and produce good quality sound. They might not help you hear perfectly in all situations, but they should help you hear:

  • speech more clearly
  • the TV at a lower volume
  • everyday alerting sounds, such as the doorbell and telephone ringing
  • quieter sounds that you would struggle to hear without hearing aids

They will also automatically adjust to different environments, so that sounds are not uncomfortably loud.

When you first get hearing aids, it will take some time to get used to:

  • the feeling of them in your ears
  • using different settings
  • cleaning and maintaining them
  • adjusting to all the new sounds you can hear

The more often you wear your hearing aids, the faster you’ll get used to them.
